What college students need

describe the image

College students likely won’t admit this, and in all honesty may not even realize it, but there are things we miss about home when we’re away at college.  There are things we just can’t fulfill between the dozens of offices, clubs, and classes found on campus.  Following are my amalgamated observations and experiences about what I think it is we meddling-marriage-delaying-millennials need, though we may try to convince you we don’t.

Trying Times

On Wednesday we visited the displaced community of Chutinamit. We had the opportunity to receive a tour of the village by one of their community leaders, Tomás. About 5 years ago mudslides caused by Hurricane Agatha destroyed their village. For four and a half years the twenty-one families of this community lived in tents on a hilltop. These tents were composed of tarps held up simply by ropes and sticks. Many cooked with fires on the dirt floor and slept on those same “floors” with no pads or bedding. Unfortunately, the Guatemalan government did not provide much assistance for the community. Instead, the government spent the money to build a beautiful soccer field about one hundred yards away from the community living in tents for four and a half years. The contradictory sight is heartbreaking.

4 Reasons I Have Remained at UE

3 Cool Spots for Hot Coffee

The weather is beginning to change and those blistery fall winds are accompanied so wonderfully by a warm mug of coffee. Being a self-proclaimed coffee aficionado, I am always sure where to go when anyone needs a cup-of-joe. Although UE has a coffee shop on campus, Jazzman’s Café, I no longer have a meal plan, and it’s nice to take a little walk off campus for some coffee. Here are three of my favorite local coffee shops near campus (in no particular order):

Embrace the Ace

Posing as Ace Purple

Hey everyone- my name is Jenn Pickles and I’m one of the new student bloggers! I have just begun my senior year at the University of Evansville. I am majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in English as a New Language. I am hoping to one day teach abroad, but for now I am enjoying student teaching at a local elementary school. After moving from Toronto, ON to Evansville at a young age, I have grown up loving this city. community

Now I didn't choose to attend UE because of the weather...if I had I'd be in warm and sunny place like Texas.  I didn't choose UE because of the bustling city - seeing as I'm from the Chicago suburbs - Evansville doesn't quite compare.  I chose UE because of the academic programs offered and the opportunities for career preparation.
